Aging in America Community Services
The comprehensive programs of Aging in America Community Services (AIACS) reach thousands of seniors throughout the Bronx each year. The array of services provided enables many individuals to remain in their homes far longer than would have been possible only a few years ago. AIACS senior centers, nutrition programs, adult day services, employment services, case management, intergenerational programs and counseling services, offer individuals everything from nutritious meals, to access to health information, to social interaction.
Senior Centers AIACS senior centers offer educational, recreational and social activities as well as meals and nutrition education. The Congregate Services Initiative provides support, coordination and innovative programming to smaller informal senior groups. We provide opportunities for intergenerational exchanges where younger generations can learn from and support our elderly.
Congregate Meal Program The Congregate Meal program prepares and delivers 85,000 meals annually in six different locations throughout the Bronx to more than 1100 individuals while the AIACS food pantry provides non-perishable food packages to any individual in need regardless of age or financial status. More than 4,000 individuals take advantage of this service each year.
Interactive Programs Realizing that loneliness and depression can often lead to physical ailments, we have created many opportunities for seniors to connect with others. Our intergenerational programs provide mentoring opportunities for seniors and work-study and community service opportunities for students. Our telephone reassurance program provides a ‘check in’ with those seniors most at risk of isolation. Our trained staff not only provides companionship, but also can provide access to much needed other services and AIACS, as part of the AIA Continuum of Care, can readily support seniors in accessing the medical care they need.
Case Management The homebound Case Management program provides in-home assessments and authorization for the delivery of in-home personal care, housekeeping services, social adult day services and home delivered meals for those who need it.
Transportation Getting to and from medical and social activities is often critical to the physical and mental well-being of seniors; our transportation services provide nearly 4,000 trips each year to those in need. Our Senior Service Community Employment Program enables us to provide training opportunities for those who are 55 years of age or older at non-profit agencies in the Bronx with the goal of seeking permanent employment.
Social Work Our Social Work Department provides case management to over 1,000 independent and homebound individuals each year providing home assessment and authorization for the delivery of in-home personal care, housekeeping services, social adult day services and home delivered meals. We also provide emergency assistance through this program for those 60 years of age and older, elder abuse prevention and intervention services to over 100 clients each year. Counseling services can include assistance with managed care, information, referral, benefits/entitlements assistance, immigrant services, supportive contact and advocacy. We also provide individual and group counseling services to seniors over age 60.
Community Connection In our efforts to enhance community relations throughout our multicultural borough of the Bronx, local organizations are encouraged to utilize space at our easily accessible facility for a nominal cost, to hold meetings and special events.
